1 Student must be able to meet state attendance guidelines of the EMS Bureau. Must be able to read and comprehend at the high school level. This course will be taught in conjunction with the EMT Basic course. This course is designed to improve the quality of emergency medical care rendered to victims of accidents and illnesses. Oral and written communication skills and medical terminology are reinforced in this course through simulated in-school laboratory activities designed to provide opportunities for students to develop clinical skills and appropriate ethical behaviors. Students will be eligible to test for an Industry Based Certification (IBC). 1, 5

1 or 2 This course must be scheduled with the First Responder course for either one or two hours daily. This course is taken in conjuction with the First Responder course when the EMT-Basic requirements cannot be met.  It includes medical terminology, legal and ethical issues, oral and written communications, infection control, CPR, and first aid.  (1) 3, 7

2 Enrollment is limited.  Students must meet the following state guidelines to enroll:  Graduation senior, 17 years or older, copy of immunization record, recent TB test, letter of recommendation from Principal -or- Counselor, letter from physician indicating student is physically fit to perform requirements of occupation.  A 2.5 or better GPA, completion of Biology.  Student must keep 80% average to maintain enrollment.  Those students that have not previously completed the First Responder course.  Must schedule First Responder in combination with EMT-Basic This course continues concepts and procedures taught in First Responder including advanced airways. Students who complete and pass this course and test will receive state and national certification.
