The following courses will be offered for credit at the LCB Academy during the
2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR:
Entertainment Media #00920 (one-half credit)
Entertainment Media is a survey of entertainment in the United States from the
1900 – 1960’s. Many different media will be explored such as the Silent Era,
Radio Era, Black and White Era, the “Talkies”, Color, Cinemascope and Cinerama
of the 1950’s. Students will study how these art forms reflected the society in
which they were created. Class will meet one day a week after school, 4:00 pm –
6:45 pm. Day of week tba. Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors that have
taken Art 1 –or- have permission of the instructor.
Art 3-D Design #9302 (one full credit)
This course will involve the student in the production of hands-on art such as
sculpture, pottery, stained glass, paper mache, etc. The course will introduce
the background of the medium and include step by step procedures necessary to
complete an individual project. Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors that
have taken Art 1 –or- have permission of the instructor.
Fine Arts Survey #9124 (one full credit)
This is an appreciation course that surveys music and art. Students will study
major composers, artists, and their works. History, styles, principles, and
periods will be covered. Open to freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior level
students.
Music Mastery 1 #009179 (one full credit)
This course offers a unique blend of instrumental and choral music exploration
that expands the range of musical experience and performance beyond that found
in typical musical courses. Elements of classical, folk, spiritual, jazz,
electronic and avant-garde music are components of the curriculum. Performance,
composition, appreciation and improvisation are utilized to enhance the
preparation of students for music careers or lifelong participation in musical
activities. Schedule of face to face class time will be based on each student
and assigned instructor. Open to students sixth grade and above currently
enrolled in a music course at the home-based school and/or recommendation by
CPSB music teacher/principal.
Music Mastery 2 #009180 (one full credit)
This carnegie unit course is an extension of the Academy Music Mastery 1 course.
It continues to offer a blend of instrumental and choral music exploration that
expands the range of musical experience and performance beyond that found in
Academy Music Mastery 1. Prerequisite: Music Mastery 1
AP Studio Art #9410 (one full credit)
An in depth look at 1D, 2D, and 3D art produced by the student in multiple
medias, concentrated around a central idea. Student work will be compiled in a
student portfolio which will be submitted to the AP Board for consideration of
college credit. Requires signature of approval of home based school counselor.
Theatre 1 (one full credit)
This is an introductory course that prepares students for participation in the
advanced theatre curriculum. The course covers a wide range of artistic and
technical components that are fundamental in the operations of theatre
production. The course provides opportunities to plan, organize, rehearse, and
perform before an audience. Open to freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior
level students.
Process Technician 1 #009266 (one full high school credit –AND- three hours
credit at SOWELA)
This course, taught in cooperation with SOWELA Technical College, is an
introduction to Process Technology. The course covers a basic overview of an
operator’s job including responsibilities and duties, personal and environmental
safety, workplace communication/ethics and industrial equipment. Open to Senior
level students. This is a one semester course offered in the fall semester.
Process Technician 2 (one full high school credit –AND- three hours credit at
SOWELA)
This course is an overview of safety problems and solutions. Survey of the basic
elements of safety and addresses the potential hazards/solutions that workers
encounter in different occupations. Prerequisite: Process Technician 1. Open to
Senior level students. This is a one semester course taught in the spring
semester.
Drafting and Design Technology 1 #9250 (2 full credits)
An introductory course in technical drawings using CAD (Computer Automated
Drawing) as the main drawing system. This course will cover basic drawing skills
with emphasis on engineering and architecture. Open to sophomore, junior, and
senior level students.
Drafting and Design Technology 2 #9337 (2 full credits)
An intermediate course in technical drawings in which students will be
introduced to various drafting disciplines as architectural, civil, structural,
and piping. Completing Drafting 1 and 2 will allow the student to test for an
Industry Based Certification (IBC) to be a certified drafter through the
American Design Drafting Association. Prerequisite: Drafting 1. Open to
sophomore, junior, and senior level students.
Drafting and Design Technology 3 (2 full credits)
An advanced course in technical drawings which will use a more comprehensive
approach to AutoCAD and drafting disciplines. Students will be eligible to test
for Industry Based Certification (IBC) through the American Design Drafting
Association. Prerequisites: Drafting 1 –AND- Drafting 2. Open to senior level
students.
First Responder #9386 (1.5 credits)
This course is designed to improve the quality of emergency medical care
rendered to victims of accidents and illnesses. Oral and written communication
skills and medical terminology are reinforced in this course through simulated
in-school laboratory activities designed to provide opportunities for students
to develop clinical skills and appropriate ethical behaviors. Students will be
eligible to test for an Industry Based Certification (IBC). Prerequisite:
Student must be sixteen (16) years of age by May 2009 and able to meet state
attendance guidelines of the EMS Bureau. Must be able to read and comprehend at
the high school level. This is a semester course.
EMT Basic #9492 (3 full credits)
This course continues concepts and procedures taught in First Responder
including advanced airways. Students who complete and pass this course and test
will receive state and national certification. Enrollment is limited.
Prerequisite: First Responder –AND- Instructor recommendation. This class is a
full year class.
Pharmacy Technician #9494 (one full credit)
This course is primarily a computer-based instructional class. Students
completing this course will be eligible to test as a Pharmacy Tech and will be
able to assist in a pharmacy. There is a state testing fee required as part of
this class. Prerequisite: Chemistry 1, an ACT score of 20, and must be eighteen
(18) years old by July 1 of the year they graduate.
Sports Medicine 1 #009364 (one-half credit)
This course is designed to provide an overview of the field of sports
medicine as well as expose students to fundamental skills involved in a sports
medicine healthcare setting. Students will learn about the study of medicine and
how the field of sports medicine is unique in its focus and delivery of
healthcare. This is a semester course that will meet for two hours each day.
Open to Sophomore and Junior Level students.
Sports Medicine 2 #009365 (one-half credit)
This course, taught in the second semester, is designed to provide students with
an overview of the pathology of sports injuries and the basic management skills.
Students will learn about the body’s response to an injury and how to apply
basic emergency action principles and skills. An emphasis is placed on an
athlete’s psychological and sociological response to an injury and basic coping
strategies utilized by healthcare professions to assist them to recovery.
Prerequisite: Sports Medicine 1. This is a semester course that will meet for
two hours each day. Open to Sophomore and Junior level students. Note that
Sports Medicine 3, a full credit course will be offered in 2009-10 school year.
Web Design 1 #7116 (one full credit)
An introductory course in the steps involved in planning, developing, designing,
and maintaining a web page. Prerequisite: Introduction to BCA. Open to
sophomore, junior, and senior level students.
Web Design 2 #007235 (one full credit)
An intermediate level course in Web Design. Students will work with links,
create forms and tables, and images, as well as multimedia objects. Students
will create digital portfolios. Prerequisite: Web Design 1. Open to junior and
senior level students.
Database Design and Programming #7270 (full credit)
Students in this course will participate in the Oracle Academy in cooperation
with the Louisiana Department of Education. This course will investigate
relational databases and database design systems. Students completing this
course will be eligible to take the Oracle Certified Professional Exam and the
Introduction to Oracle9i SQL Exam. Prerequisites: Algebra 1 –AND- Introduction
to BCA. Open to junior and senior level students.
Television Production 1 #009263 (2 full credits)
This course prepares students to support broadcast managers in the production of
materials and programs for broadcasting. Emphasis is placed on conceptual
learning as well as developing practical skills critical to the successful
operation of various pieces of equipment used in expanded television systems.
Open to sophomore, junior, and senior level students. Note that Television
Production 2, a two credit course, will be offered in the 2009-10 school year.
Early Childhood Education 1 #009104 (two full credits)
This course prepares students to work with children, birth to 8 years of age.
Emphasis is placed on enhancing the development of young children while
providing early education and care. Foundation skill development assists
students desiring to meet requirements for the Child Development Associate (CDA)
credential. Open to junior and senior level students. Note that Early Childhood
Education 2, a two credit course, will be offered in the 2009-10 school year.
STAR 1 #009539 (one full credit)
This course, Students Teaching and Reaching, is a high school course designed to
attract students to the field of education, provide information and field
experiences relevant to pursuing a degree in education, and to prepare them for
the rigors of a career in education. Prerequisite: 2.5 or higher overall GPA and
acceptance by the STAR Review Panel. Open to junior and senior level students.
Note that STAR 2, a full credit course, will be offered in the 2009-10 school
year.
Networking Basics #9274 (two full credits)
An intermediate level course that teaches students basic computer networking.
Students completing this course will be proficient at building a structured
network cabling system. Prerequisites: Algebra 1 –AND- Physical Science.
Switching Basics and Intermediate Routing #9361 (two full credits)
An advanced level course that teaches students advanced computer networking
skills. Students will learn to configure networking components and design
networking infrastructure. Students will also learn to install servers and
network security. Prerequisites: Computer Electronics 1.
AP English 4 online #001405 (one full credit)
This course, taught by an Academy instructor, will be available online. This is
a college level course in which students successfully completing the AP exam
(score of 3 or higher) can earn college credit. This course engages students in
the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. A
face-to-face meeting with the instructor will be required once each six weeks.
Prerequisite: English 3. Open to senior level students.
AP Biology 2 online #003210 (one full credit)
This course, taught by an Academy instructor, will be available online. This is
a college level course in which students successfully completing the AP exam
(score of 3 or higher) can earn college credit. The focus of this course is to
provide students with a foundation in the conceptual framework, factual
knowledge, and analytical skills needed in college. face-to-face meeting with
the instructor will be required once each six weeks. Prerequisite: Biology 1
–AND- Chemistry 1. Open to junior and senior level students.
Physics via compressed video (one full
credit)
This live interactive course will be taught via live video by an Academy
Instructor. Students taking this course should have a successful math
background. Emphasis will be placed on vectors, work, energy, physical states of
matter, heat, and electricity. Prerequisite: Algebra 2. Open to junior and
senior level students enrolled at Starks, Vinton, DeQuincy, and Bell City High
Schools only.
AP Physics online (one full credit)
This course, taught by an Academy Instructor will be available online. This is a
college level course in which students successfully completing the AP exam
(score of 3 or higher) can earn college credit. Emphasis will be placed on
vectors, work, energy, physical states of matter, heat, and electricity.
Prerequisite: Algebra 2. Open to junior and senior level students.
Louisiana Virtual School Coursework
Louisiana Virtual School Courses are offered free of charge to qualifying
students. Any student enrolled in an approved CPSB public school is eligible to
participate. Students can access the course offerings through the LVS website,
www.louisianavirtualschool.net.
Students interested in completing coursework through LVS through the summer
should contact the Academy as soon as possible at 217.4390 and ask for the
Director. Students will be enrolled through the Academy and will complete
coursework while working online at the Academy. An Academy instructor will be
on-site during the regular school day and after school each day. Requires
written permission from Principal and Counselor.
Physics #3303 (one full credit)
Students taking this course should have a successful math background. Emphasis
will be placed on vectors, work, energy, physical states of matter, heat, and
electricity. Prerequisite: Algebra 2. Open to junior and senior level students.
Biology 2 #3310 (one full credit)
This course is an expansion of the biological principles and concepts presented
in Biology. It is intended to strengthen a student’s background for a career in
medicine or biological science. Prerequisites: Biology 1 –AND- Chemistry 1. Open
to junior and senior level students.
Chemistry 2 #3407 (one full credit)
This course is intended to strengthen the student’s knowledge of chemistry
concepts introduced in Chemistry 1 with additional emphasis on laboratory
experiences. This course will introduce most of the topics in an introductory
college general chemistry course. Prerequisites: Chemistry 1 –AND- Algebra 2.
Open to senior level students.
AP Psychology #002325 (one full credit)
This college level course is designed to introduce students to the scientific
and systematic study of behavior and mental processes for human beings. Students
successfully completing the AP exam (score of 3 or higher) can earn college
credit. Prerequisite: Biology 1 Open to junior and senior level students.
AP World History #2107 (one full credit)
This college level course is designed to guide students in developing a greater
understanding of global processes and contacts including interactions over time.
This course highlights the course of natural changes in international frameworks
and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies.
Students successfully completing the AP exam (score of 3 or higher) can earn
college credit. Open to freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior level students.
AP American History #2312 (one full credit)
This college level course will challenge student’s thinking about the history of
the United States. Students will learn to analyze, reach, and support
conclusions both orally and in writing. Students will be expected to synthesize
material in order to construct a meaningful larger picture. The course will
follow a chronological path viewed from various political, economic and social
perspectives. Students successfully completing the AP exam (score of 3 or
higher) can earn college credit. Open to junior and senior level students.
Senior Project #1450 (one full credit)
Successful completion of this course will qualify the student for an Academic
Diploma Endorsement. Students will be required to complete a multifaceted
project, write a research paper, mentor under a member of the community, and
present their findings at the end of the year to a panel of judges. This class,
supervised by an Academy Instructor, will have a face to face meeting once a
week. This course allows students to select and explore an area or field of
their own choosing and to relate what they have learned to “real life”
experiences. Open to senior level students.
Introduction to Engineering 109 #009397 (one full high school credit –AND- 3
hours college credit)
This course, taught in cooperation with McNeese State University, is an
introduction to techniques needed to successfully study engineering while in
college and skills needed to effectively perform as practicing engineers after
graduation. The course addresses the functions of engineers, working as part of
a team, and the use of computers in engineering problem solving and design. Open
to Senior level students.
Louisiana History and Theatre (Louisiana History is for middle school credit,
Theatre would count as elective high school credit awarded after 24 credits are
earned on the high school campus)
This eighth grade history course offers an intricate, detailed study of
Louisiana’s growth and development from it’s first occupants to the present day
Louisiana. This course will incorporate details of Louisiana’s history with the
inclusion of the fine arts, visual arts, and the performing arts. The students
will investigate, research, and act out Louisiana’s history. Open to eighth
grade students only with the recommendation of their principal and counselor.
